Down and Out in Denver

Rue McClanahan (1934-2010)

Posted in tv by Alastair on June 3, 2010

Rue McClanahan, one of the two remaining Golden Girls, died early this morning of a stroke. TV audiences knew McClanahan well as the sexually liberated aging southern belle, Blanche Devereaux in the 1986 to 1992 NBC sitcom, “The Golden Girls.” McClanahan was also a regular on “Maude” and “Mama’s Family.” McClanahan’s death means that Betty White is now the only surviving member of “The Golden Girls.” Estelle Getty died in 2008, followed by Bea Arthur just last year.

Rue’s Blanche had many golden moments including this classic scene in which vain Blanche expects to be the object of everyone’s desire, even a gay house guest.

I write from Firenze, Italia, where I am on vacay. Needless to say, I am in mourning. And yet no one here seems to be talking about the passing of Blanche.

The clip you picked, Alastair, was certainly one of my favorite Blanche moments, but there were so many, many more. Rue, R.I.P.

We move south to Siena today, and I am not totally sure about internet access after that point, but suffice it to say that from the moment we landed in Roma the footwear and eyewear have been fantastic. I cannot stop myself from looking down at everyone’s shoes.

I promise a full post upon return.

Siena! my home. Please eat as many ricciarelli as you can stuff into you; there is nothing like them in the world. And my condolences. Both for Blanche and for our substandard footwear.
