Down and Out in Denver

We ♥ Mondo Guerra

Mondo Guerra

Before I talk about the ways that Mondo Guerra has worked his way into our hearts, let me say a few other things about last night’s show:

  • People are really funny talking about Ivy:  She can sew, but she’s not so much as a designer.  She’s intense and bitchy and exacting.  She thinks pretty highly of herself.
  • Gretchen — despite a few snide comments about Casanova — seems to have calmed down somewhat from her earlier antics. Perhaps she took Tim’s criticism to heart?
  • Kristen Bell?  Really?!?  Has it come to this, Project Runway?  Is she about to appear in some Lifetime TV movie and this was something worked out with the network?  ‘Cause she is hardly known for her fashion forward choices. Aside from Veronica Mars and that unfortunate looking film about some wedding in Italy with Josh Duhamel, she is hardly known at all.  Did you see the dress she was wearing?  Did you see the way that Kors and Heidi and la Garcia hardly interacted with her?  Did you hear her say that she would wear April’s “dress” on the red carpet?  Did you hear her describe herself as punk baby doll?  Did you ask yourself why that would be a good idea for an aesthetic?  As far as guest judges go, it was a train wreck from beginning to end.

But now on to MONDO!  Yes, he may have designed a “junior” outfit (a term heretofore confined to department stores) that the judges hated.  Yes, even we may have thought it was a bit silly looking, but for all these reasons, we love him still:

  • His description of Ivy: “She’s a powerhouse and a bossy lady.”
  • His wonderful turnaround on the Michael C front.  Do I love Michael C?  I do not.  But Mondo seems to have realized that he may have judged him too harshly.  And he said this, not only to us at home, but also to Michael himself, apologizing for being a bitch and a dick and a jerk.  Props to Mondo.
  • And then he did so again on the runway, claiming that whatever faults his outfit had, they were not because of Michael’s sewing.
  • His outfits!  I loved the little suit with the pink shirt and the bowtie.  Adorable!
  • His hair!  So many options, so many styles!
  • His tiny little limbs in those shorts and t-shirts.  Alastair and I are on the smaller side ourselves and we do like to see the non-muscled gays represent.
  • He’s from Denver!

Mondo Guerra, will you be our friend when you return to the Mile High City?  This city needs more folks like you.  Where do you hang out?  Who are your friends?  Do you belong to a little clique of fashionable hipsters?  If so, can we join you?  Please email us at downandoutindenver AT gmail DOT com.

I finally got around to watching that epi last night, after a TiVo screwup meant I had to re-record it. And yes, I agree whole heartedly: did you see he and Michael were even holding hands at one point (on the runway, I think)? That was a cute moment. Being able to change one’s mind and be humble about it is one of the most endearing possible qualities.

True, his outfit wasn’t the luxe sophistication one associates with resortwear, but it had some coherence at least. Ivy’s thing was the worst, just a drab tenty look. Though I will admit, I empathized with her dilemma: her look for Michael D. was done early and done well — it must have been frustrating for her not to have him finish her pretty simplistic design. When she said she dumbed it down for him, I have to believe it, given that he didn’t even finish the super-simple thing she ended up with.

I was glad April got the win. Those gramma underpants under the sheer babydoll with the cool neckline were great in all ways.

I completely agree about how endearing it was that Mondo changed his mind. And then admitted it anywhere there was to admit it. Very sweet.

And yes, Ivy may be awful, but she did a great job for Michael D and he didn’t seem able to return the favor. Her outfit was snoresville.

Mondo, you might not have won Project Runway but you won the hearts of everyone who was watching the show. From all the e-mails I have read, you are truly the winner. Your clothes are amazing and I will be watching to buy something designed by you in the future. Good Luck in your future eadeavor and God Bless you.

Oh, and did you note that next weeks guest judge appears to be January Jones — to judge a Jackie O-inspired look? Looking forward to that!

I have to say that January Jones’ Betty — I did see! — is among my least favorite of the Mad Men characters (I get bored when we go home with Don; I’d much rather stay at the office), but I am very curious to see what she’s like out of character AND what she has to say about Jackie O-inspired clothing…

I, like Squadratomagico, finally got around to watching this episode over the weekend. I agree on all fronts. Ivy has crazy in her eyes. Seriously.

I’m most looking forward to seeing January Jones next week. Is it a step up from Kristen Bell? Yes. I do find Ms. Jones strikingly beautiful (it’s impossible to deny), but she’s also one of those people who seems, at least in interviews, as though she’s a few eggs short of a dozen. While her Mad Men character Betty Draper is clearly well styled and the Jackie O connection is obvious, I do find her personal style to be very questionable. She’s made some poor dress choices, particularly on the red carpet. Really, the blue mullet dress at the Emmy Awards…

Well, when you put it that way, then yes, January Jones is fantastic. But when you start with Kristen Bell there’s almost nowhere to go but up.

    I love Mondo!!!!

I don’t think he is as sweet as you think. He told a teen club that supports gay rights that he doesn’t do free appearances. Apparently he thinks he is worth paying to promote a cause.

    • Blake said, on October 5, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Obviously I can’t really speak to much more than his appearance on PR, Rory, where he does seem quite sweet. I believe it was Mondo who said that he had about 13 bucks in the bank when he made it on the show. He may be trying to capitalize on his 15 minutes of fame while they last…
