Down and Out in Denver

Happy Thanksgiving!

Posted in food by Alastair on November 25, 2010

The DOD boys wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving! At to our brethren in Canada, a belated Bonne Action de Grâces!

You may be asking, “What is dear, old Alastair thankful for?” That’s easy… PIE! I LOVE pie. Seriously. I could talk about pie or not talk about pie for hours. This is a pie-mazing time of the year. Pumpkin pie, pecan pie, apple pie, sweet potato pie, and any number of other Thanksgiving pies. No matter how much you’ve eaten, there’s always room for at least a sliver of pie. Always. I especially like pie in the morning. A cold slice of pumpkin or apple pie with a hot cup of coffee has to be one of my favorite combinations this time of year.

Ina Garten has offered up a Pumpkin Banana Mousse Tart recipe via Google. I stopped by Frank Bonanno’s Wednesday’s Pie on Larimer Square, recently. Now open for about two weeks, Wednesday’s Pie typically serves three kinds of old fashioned pies, in addition to coffee and ice cold milk, every Wednesday from 11am until they run out. I grabbed a slice of pumpkin maple and banana cream pie. Pies run $20 each, or $5 a slice. I was very pleased with the banana cream pie topped with sliced banana and a drizzle of chocolate. I’m a big fan of cream pies, especially coconut cream pie. My mother made a terrific lemon meringue pie when I was younger. When I lived in in Northern California, I stopped a number of times at Marie Callender’s to pick up an entire egg custard pie. Delicious!

So, a very Happy Thanksgiving from DOD, and may this season be filled with pie!

So busy have I been eating pecan pie and apple crisp that I haven’t been able to write in until now. Happy Thanksgiving from the East Coast, where it is not as cold as one would think…
